Is There a Roku IPTV App Coming in 2027? What Roku Actually Builds

Short answer: no. Roku hasn't announced a "Roku IPTV app" for 2027, and the articles describing one, with multi-view, AI curation and a "2028 roadmap", aren't based on anything Roku has published. What Roku does build is already on your device: the Live TV guide, The Roku Channel, Roku OS itself and the Roku mobile app, plus a growing set of subscriptions it sells or owns. The catch is that none of these will ever open a playlist or login from a third-party IPTV seller. That's by design, and it isn't changing.

Where the "2027 IPTV app" came from

Search for the phrase and you'll find confident descriptions of a Roku IPTV app launching in 2027: a new electronic programme guide, AI recommendations, multi-stream viewing, picture-in-picture and a subscription you manage in your Roku account. Some even list a roadmap for 2028.

None of it traces back to Roku. There's no press release, no developer announcement and no product page. The pattern is familiar from auto-generated content: take a popular search phrase, add a year, and describe features that sound plausible.

Two real things give these pages a kernel of truth. Roku genuinely has been building more live TV into its home screen for years. And sellers of IPTV subscriptions do describe their playlists as "working on Roku". Neither is an app called "Roku IPTV".

If you arrived looking for a way to play a playlist on your Roku, the realistic options are covered in playing an M3U playlist on Roku. The rest of this piece covers what Roku itself makes.

The four pieces Roku actually builds

Most owners experience these as one thing, but they are separate products with separate jobs.

Product What it does Where it runs
Roku OS The operating system: home screen, settings, search, store Roku players and Roku TVs
Live TV guide A channel grid on the home menu; mixes free streaming channels and, on Roku TVs, antenna channels US Roku devices
The Roku Channel Roku's own free service: live channels, films, series, Roku Originals Roku devices, plus other TVs, phones and the web in the US
Roku mobile app Remote, keyboard, private listening, casting your own photos and videos iPhone and Android

When people imagine a "Roku IPTV app", they're usually picturing the Live TV guide. It already exists, it's free, and it's the first thing to explore on any US Roku.

The Roku Channel, up close

The Roku Channel is Roku's answer to Pluto TV and Tubi, and in the US it's one of the most-watched free streaming services.

Live channels. Several hundred free, ad-supported channels: national and local news in many areas, sport-related programming, classic series, films and niche channels. Roku adds more most months.

On demand. A rotating library of films and series, plus Roku Originals, all free with adverts.

Premium subscriptions. Inside the same app, Roku sells add-on subscriptions to other services, billed through your Roku account.

Not just on Roku. In the US The Roku Channel is also available on the web, on phones and on several other TV platforms, which is one reason it's grown.

What it isn't. It doesn't carry most cable networks or live major-league sport, and it has no way to add your own channels or a playlist.

The subscriptions Roku owns or sells

Roku increasingly makes money from subscriptions as well as advertising, and it has moved into owning services rather than only reselling them.

  • Frndly TV, a low-cost live-TV service focused on family and lifestyle channels, is owned by Roku.
  • Howdy, a $2.99-a-month ad-free film and TV service launched by Roku, has since been offered beyond Roku devices.
  • Premium add-ons such as Apple TV and Peacock were added to Roku's in-app subscriptions in 2026, according to Roku's early-2026 results, which also reported a record quarter for premium sign-ups.

This is the realistic direction for live and on-demand TV "from Roku": more services sold at the point you're watching, not a playlist player. If paid live TV is what you're after, compare the main services in our guide to the best live TV streaming services.

What Roku OS updates actually change

Roku ships a major Roku OS version roughly once a year, with smaller updates in between. They arrive automatically, often gradually over several weeks.

Recent pattern. Roku OS 14, in 2024, added a Kids and Family area to the home screen and voice control for TV settings. Roku OS 15 began rolling out to a limited group of devices in October 2025 with performance work: faster app loading and a more responsive interface. Past updates have focused on sport and live TV discovery, and on the home screen's personalised rows.

What that means. Real Roku updates are incremental and focused on finding things to watch. They don't add sideloading, new playlist formats or a built-in IPTV player, and nothing Roku has said suggests a 2027 update will.

Checking your version. In Settings, the System section shows your software version and lets you check for an update.

What Roku won't build

Understanding the limits saves a lot of searching.

Feature people hope for Reality
A built-in M3U or Xtream player Not offered; third-party store apps only
Sideloading apps Never allowed
Private channels by code Ended on 23 February 2022
Apps for unlicensed services Removed from the store when found

Roku's business depends on advertisers and licensed content partners trusting its platform. A general-purpose IPTV player would undercut both. Our explainer on why Roku IPTV codes stopped working covers the 2022 change in detail.

How to check any "new Roku feature" claim

  1. Look for it on Roku's own newsroom or blog. Real features are announced there.
  2. Check Roku's support site. Roku publishes release notes for every OS version.
  3. Look for a date and a version number. Genuine features name the Roku OS version or the month they arrive.
  4. Be wary of feature lists without screenshots. Especially when the article also sells a subscription.
  5. Ask who benefits. A page promising a "Roku IPTV app" that links to a cheap IPTV seller is advertising, not news.
