Short answer: IPTV on a Roku works well for licensed live-TV apps and Roku's own free channels, and poorly for anything else. Most frustration comes from a handful of facts nobody mentions at the start: Roku can't run Android apps, private channel codes died in 2022, removing an app doesn't cancel its subscription, and the cheapest Roku sticks have no Ethernet port for live sport. None of these is hard to handle once you know it. The catch is that most people learn them one at a time, usually after paying for something that doesn't work.
At a glance
IPTV and Roku, the essentials
| Android apps | Won't run on Roku |
| Private channel codes | Dead since February 2022 |
| Free live TV | Built in, in the US |
| Deleting an app | Doesn't cancel billing |
| Live sport | Wants a wired connection |
1 and 2: What Roku will and won't install
1. A Roku is not an Android device. This is the root of most confusion. Guides written for Fire TV and Android TV boxes dominate search results, and they recommend Android apps such as TiviMate. A Roku runs its own operating system and can only install apps built for it and approved for the Roku Store. There's no "unknown sources" setting, no Downloader app and no APK file that will work.
That doesn't mean a Roku is short of apps. Every major live-TV service and free streaming service has one. It means the specific Android player a friend uses probably isn't an option.
2. Private channel codes stopped working in 2022. Until early 2022, developers could share non-certified Roku channels through an install code. Roku removed those channels on 23 February 2022 and deactivated the codes. Lists of "working Roku IPTV codes" still circulate and still rank in search, but entering them does nothing. We explain the change, and what replaced it, in Roku IPTV codes don't work any more.
3: The free guide you may not have opened
3. There's already a free live-TV service on your Roku. On US Rokus, Live TV on the home menu opens a channel guide filled by The Roku Channel, with several hundred free, ad-supported channels: news, local news in many areas, classic series, films and a long tail of niche channels. Roku adds more most months.
Plenty of people pay for a subscription and only later discover that half of what they watch was free all along. Before paying for anything, spend a few evenings with the free guide, then add Pluto TV and Tubi if you want more.
What it won't give you is most cable networks, live major-league sport or cloud DVR. For those you need a paid service; the main ones are compared in best live TV streaming services for 2026.
4: It depends where you live
4. Roku's features and apps vary by country. Most English-language guides are written for the US. The Live TV guide, The Roku Channel's line-up, the paid live services and even some menu labels differ elsewhere, and some are missing entirely.
Your Roku account's country decides the store. The apps you see are tied to the country the account was set up in, not where the device happens to be.
Services check location separately. Live-TV services also check where you are, which is why a US service stops working abroad or shows the wrong local channels after a move. Local line-ups are usually set on the service's website, not on the Roku.
If you're outside the US, look for a guide written for your country, such as our pages on live TV in Canada without cable or UK live TV without Sky.
5 and 6: Picture and connection surprises
5. A 4K Roku doesn't guarantee a 4K picture. Three things all have to line up: the TV's HDMI port must support 4K with the right copy protection, the cable must be up to it, and the stream itself must be 4K. Most live TV, even on paid services, is broadcast in HD; 4K is limited to selected events. If your 4K Roku only offers HD in its display settings, try a different HDMI port before blaming the device.
6. Live sport is where Wi-Fi shows its weakness. A film can buffer well ahead and hide a patchy connection. A live stream can't, so a weak signal shows up as blurring and stalls at exactly the moment something happens.
| Roku type | Ethernet port | Live sport verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Roku Streaming Stick (HD) | No | Fine near the router |
| Roku Streaming Stick Plus / 4K | No | Good on strong 5 GHz Wi-Fi |
| Roku Ultra | Yes | Best choice |
| Roku TV | Usually | Good when wired |
For a full diagnosis when things do stall, see why your stream buffers.
7 and 8: The money traps
7. Deleting an app doesn't cancel the subscription. Removing an app from the home screen only removes the app. If you subscribed through Roku, cancel at my.roku.com on the subscriptions page. If you subscribed on the service's website, cancel there. Many people find out when the next month's charge arrives.
8. One button can start a paid trial. Roku asks for a payment method when you set up an account, and many apps offer trials that start with a single press and roll into a paid plan. On a shared TV, children and guests start them without realising. The fix takes a minute: at my.roku.com, require a PIN for purchases and for adding apps.
While you're there, the subscriptions page shows everything billed through Roku with renewal dates. It's worth a look every few months.
9: Cheap subscriptions that vanish
9. "Roku-compatible" IPTV subscriptions often don't last. Sellers offering thousands of premium channels for a few dollars a month often describe their service as working on Roku. These prices can't cover the licences for the channels on offer, and services like this tend to disappear without warning, sometimes mid-season and with a year paid up front.
There's also a Roku-specific twist. The apps such services rely on get removed from the Roku Store when rights holders complain, and a removed app stops working and can't be reinstalled. Rights holders and several governments stepped up action against unlicensed IPTV in 2026, covered in the 2026 IPTV crackdown.
If a price looks too good, check the seller first; our guide on how to judge an IPTV service before you pay lists what to look for.
10: Rokus age out
10. Old Rokus gradually lose apps. Roku keeps older players working for a long time, but individual app developers eventually drop support for older hardware, and live-TV apps are usually first because they're the most demanding. The symptoms are slow guides, crashes when changing channel and, eventually, an app that won't open at all.
If your Roku is several years old and a live-TV app is struggling, restart it from the system menu first. If that doesn't help, replacing the player is usually cheaper and quicker than troubleshooting. You can check your model and software version under Settings, then System, then About.
The ten, in one table
| # | Lesson | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | No Android apps | Search the Roku Store, not Fire TV guides |
| 2 | Codes are dead | Ignore any code list |
| 3 | Free guide exists | Try Live TV before paying |
| 4 | Varies by country | Use guides for your country |
| 5 | 4K needs everything to match | Check the HDMI port |
| 6 | Live exposes Wi-Fi | Wire it for sport |
| 7 | Delete is not cancel | Cancel at my.roku.com or the service |
| 8 | One-press trials | Set a purchase PIN |
| 9 | Cheap services vanish | Vet before you pay |
| 10 | Old players lose apps | Replace when live apps struggle |

Why won't my 4K Roku show 4K? Usually the TV's HDMI port or the cable doesn't support 4K, or the stream itself is HD.
