Short answer: if your smart TV was made in 2018 or later and runs Samsung's Tizen, LG's webOS, Vizio SmartCast, Roku TV or Google TV, it almost certainly has native apps for YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, Fubo, DirecTV and Philo, so you can subscribe without buying a streaming stick. Roku TV and Google TV sets have the widest support; older Samsung, LG and Vizio models are where gaps appear. The brand-by-brand table below shows which licensed services run where, with October 2026 prices, and what to do if your TV is missing one.
At a glance
Live TV apps on smart TVs
| Widest app support | Roku TV and Google TV sets |
| Usually safe cut-off | TVs from 2018 onward |
| Most widely supported service | YouTube TV |
| App missing? | A $30 to $50 streaming stick fixes it |
| Built-in free channels | Every major brand has its own |
The brand-by-brand support table
Built from each service's published device lists and support pages. "Yes" means a native app exists on current models of that platform; the notes give model-year cut-offs where providers publish them. "Check" means we couldn't confirm a native app, so look in your TV's app store before subscribing.

Two caveats apply to every row. Providers drop support for old TVs over time, and Sling's own help page warns that devices no longer getting manufacturer software updates "may eventually stop working altogether." And a few features, such as multiview or 4K, sometimes arrive on streaming sticks before they reach TV apps.
What each TV platform is like for live TV
Roku TV (TCL, Hisense, Sharp and others). The same Roku operating system as a Roku stick, so every live TV service with a Roku app works. Simple, well supported, and The Roku Channel adds hundreds of free live channels.
Pick this if you want the least friction. Skip it only if you prefer Google's recommendations or need a specific Android app.
Google TV (Sony, TCL, Hisense and others). Runs the Google Play store, so app coverage is excellent, and YouTube TV integrates into the home screen's live guide. Cheaper sets can feel slow after a couple of years.
Pick this if you use YouTube TV or other Google services. Skip it if you want the simplest possible remote and menus.
Samsung (Tizen). All the major live TV apps from roughly 2016 or 2017 models onward, and Samsung TV Plus built in. The weak point is older sets: when a provider updates its app, pre-2017 Samsungs are often the first left behind.
Pick this if your Samsung is 2018 or newer. Skip native apps and add a stick if it's older.
LG (webOS). Strong support from 2018 models, with webOS version cut-offs (3.5 or 4.0, depending on the service). LG Channels adds free live TV.
Pick this if your LG has webOS 4.0 or later. Skip native apps on older webOS versions.
Vizio (SmartCast). Most live TV services support SmartCast TVs from 2016, and Vizio adds free channels through WatchFree+. App selection is narrower than on Roku or Google TV, so newer or smaller services may be missing.
Pick this if the services you want are listed in the table. Skip it for niche apps.
Hisense sets running VIDAA and other less common systems carry fewer live TV apps. If your TV runs one of these, check the app store before subscribing, or budget for a stick.
To find out what you have, open the TV's settings and look under About or Support for the model number and software version. Samsung lists the model year in the model code, LG shows the webOS version, and Vizio shows whether the set runs SmartCast. Those three details answer most "will it work?" questions in under a minute, and they're what a provider's help desk will ask for anyway.
What the subscriptions cost
The price is the same on every TV brand. US list prices as of October 2026, before taxes and regional fees.
| Service | Price | Streams | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV | $82.99 | 3 | Most complete, NFL |
| Hulu + Live TV | $89.99 | 2 | Disney+, Hulu and ESPN included |
| Fubo Pro | $88.99 | 10 at home | Sports variety |
| DirecTV Entertainment | $89.99 | Unlimited at home | Regional sports (Choice and up) |
| Sling Orange or Blue | $45.99 | 1 or 3 | Low-cost cable channels |
| Philo | About $33 | 3 | Entertainment, no sports |
| Frndly TV | From $8.99 | 1 to 4 | Family and classic TV |
| ESPN Unlimited | $31.99 | 3 | ESPN networks without a bundle |
| Fox One | $19.99 | Varies | Fox, FS1, Big Ten, Fox News |
Subscribe on the provider's website rather than through the TV maker's store where you can. Billing through the provider is the same price and makes cancelling simpler, since it doesn't depend on a TV account you may forget you have.
Not ready to commit? Sling has no contract: pay month to month and cancel online anytime.
See this month's plans →Free live channels already on your TV
Before paying for anything, open the free live TV service your TV already has. Every major brand now ships one, all licensed and supported by ads.
Samsung: Samsung TV Plus. LG: LG Channels. Vizio: WatchFree+. Roku TV: The Roku Channel's live guide. Google TV: free channels in the Live tab. Add Pluto TV and Tubi, which have apps on every platform above, and you have hundreds of news, movie, classic TV and niche sports channels for nothing.
What they don't carry: ESPN, the big cable networks and, with a few exceptions, your local network affiliates. An antenna plugged into the TV's tuner fills the local gap for free.
If your TV doesn't have the app
A missing or outdated app isn't a reason to change service or TV. A streaming stick costs $30 to $50, plugs into an HDMI port and gets every service on this page. Roku and Google TV sticks are the safest picks for app coverage.
A stick is also worth it when the TV's own app is slow. TV processors age faster than the apps they run, and a $40 stick on a five-year-old TV is often a dramatic upgrade.
Casting from a phone works in a pinch with some services, but live TV apps restrict casting on some channels and it's clumsy for daily use.
"Smart IPTV" apps are not a subscription
Search results for this keyword are dominated by guides to apps that show a MAC address and an activation code on your TV, then ask you to buy a playlist from a separate seller. Those apps are only players; the "subscription" being sold is the playlist, typically promising thousands of channels for a few dollars, paid by crypto or gift card.
That's not how licensed services work. YouTube TV, Sling and the rest have their own apps in your TV's store, take card payments, and give you the local channels for your ZIP code. If a guide's first step is entering a MAC address on a seller's website, it isn't selling licensed TV.
Our pick
On a Roku TV or Google TV: YouTube TV, natively, with nothing else to buy. On an older Samsung, LG or Vizio: a $30 to $50 Roku or Google TV stick, then whichever service fits your budget. On any TV, before paying: check the free channels built in, and add an antenna for locals.
Quick answers
Can I get a live TV subscription on my smart TV without a stick? Usually, yes. Samsung, LG, Vizio, Roku TV and Google TV sets from about 2018 onward have native apps for YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling, Fubo, DirecTV and Philo.
Which smart TV brand is best for live TV apps? Roku TV and Google TV sets have the widest and longest-lasting app support. Samsung, LG and Vizio are strong on newer models.
Does YouTube TV work on Samsung, LG and Vizio TVs? Yes, YouTube TV has native apps on all three, plus Roku TV and Google TV.
Why is a live TV app missing on my older TV? Providers drop support for older TV software over time. A streaming stick restores access to every service.
Is the price different on a smart TV? No. Subscription prices are the same on every device; signing up directly with the provider makes cancelling easiest.
What free live TV comes with my smart TV? Samsung TV Plus, LG Channels, Vizio WatchFree+, The Roku Channel and Google TV's free channels, all licensed and ad-supported.
Are "Smart IPTV" activation apps a subscription? No. They're players that need a playlist from a separate seller, and those cheap playlists generally aren't licensed.
App support is drawn from providers' published device lists and support pages; model-year cut-offs change as providers update their apps, so check your TV's app store before subscribing. Prices are US list prices as of October 2026, before taxes and fees. Checked October 2026.
