Short answer: six months is the right length for live TV if you watch it mainly for sports, and no licensed service needs a 6-month contract to get it. Every major US live TV service bills monthly and lets you cancel at any time, so you pay only during your season and drop it for the other six. For a football household on YouTube TV, that's $497.94 instead of $995.88 a year. For a basketball fan, you can often skip the big bundle entirely and cover national games for under $50 a month.

The 6-month season plan
| Football window | Late August to early February |
| Basketball window | Late October to April, or January to June |
| Contract needed | None; all bill monthly |
| Typical saving | $390 to $600 vs a full year |
| Off-season | Antenna plus free streaming channels |
Why six months is the natural length
American sports seasons don't overlap as much as it feels. College football starts in late August, the NFL regular season runs September to early January, and both wind up by early February. The NBA and NHL run from late October to April, with playoffs into June. Baseball covers the summer, but most of it airs on regional networks and is sold separately.
So a fan of one sport genuinely uses a live TV bundle for five or six months. The rest of the year, the bundle mostly provides entertainment channels that cheaper services also carry, and local channels that an antenna gets for free.
Unlicensed sellers sell "6 month" packages because their customers want a fixed term. With licensed services you build the term yourself, and you can stop early if your team's season ends early.
The month-by-month calendar
Here's how the 2026-27 sports year maps onto a subscription, with the licensed places each sport airs. "Hold" means the month to be paying for a live TV bundle or sports service.
| Month | What's on | Football fan | Basketball fan |
|---|---|---|---|
| August | College football kicks off late month; NFL preseason | Start late in month | Off |
| September | NFL Week 1; college conference play | Hold | Off |
| October | NFL, college; NBA and NHL openers | Hold | Start late in month |
| November | NFL, college rivalry weeks; NBA | Hold | Hold |
| December | NFL, bowl season, Christmas games | Hold | Hold |
| January | NFL playoffs, college title game | Hold | Hold |
| February | Super Bowl (broadcast TV); NBA All-Star | Antenna only | Hold |
| March | College basketball tournaments; NBA | Off | Hold |
| April | NBA regular season ends; playoffs begin | Off | Hold or switch |
| May and June | NBA and NHL playoffs and Finals | Off | Optional |
| July | Baseball, summer leagues | Off | Off |
The football window is about five paid months if you time it well: start a few days before the first college weekend and cancel after the conference championship games. The Super Bowl airs on a broadcast network, so an antenna covers it. The basketball window is six months either way: November to April for the regular season, or January to June if the playoffs matter more to you than the early season.
The football fan's six months
NFL coverage in 2026 is split across broadcast networks and streaming services, so the bundle you hold should cover the cable pieces: ESPN for Monday Night Football and college games, plus whatever regional sports channels you need. Sunday afternoon games are on your local CBS and Fox stations, and Sunday Night Football is on NBC, so locals are essential.
YouTube TV, September to January. Locals in most markets, ESPN, NFL Network and unlimited cloud DVR. Five months is $414.95; six is $497.94. Pick it if you want one app for every Sunday and Monday game. Skip it if you also need a regional sports network for an NBA or NHL team, which YouTube TV doesn't carry.
Sling Orange + antenna. Sling Orange has ESPN at $45.99 a month, and an antenna handles CBS, Fox and NBC. Five months is $229.95 plus the antenna. Pick it if you get good over-the-air reception. Skip it if you need NFL Network or more than one stream at a time; Sling Orange allows one.
ESPN Unlimited + antenna. The cheapest way to add ESPN without a bundle, at $31.99 a month. Five months is $159.95. Pick it if you're comfortable switching between apps. Skip it if you want a single guide with every channel in it.
Thursday Night Football is on Prime Video, which many households already have. Netflix has had NFL games on Christmas Day, so check that schedule in December rather than adding anything new for the whole season.
The basketball fan's six months
Since the 2025-26 season, national NBA games have been split between ESPN and ABC, NBC and Peacock, and Prime Video. That changes the math: a basketball fan who follows national games doesn't need a full cable-style bundle at all.
The national-games stack, November to April:
- Antenna for ABC and NBC games: one-time, about $30 to $60
- ESPN Unlimited: 6 x $31.99 = $191.94
- Peacock Premium for its exclusive games: 6 x $12.99 = $77.94
- Prime Video: already included with Prime for many households
That's $269.88 for six months, or about $45 a month, against $497.94 for six months of YouTube TV.
If you follow a local team, things are different. Local NBA and NHL games usually air on a regional sports network. Fubo and DirecTV Stream carry many of them, and several networks and teams now sell their own direct-to-consumer streaming subscriptions. For a local-team fan, six months of Fubo Pro ($533.94, plus any regional sports fee) or of the team's own streaming service is the usual answer. Check your ZIP code on the service's site before signing up, because carriage varies by market.
Not ready to commit? Sling has no contract: pay month to month and cancel online anytime.

Monthly list prices as of October 2026, before tax and fees.
| Service | Monthly | 12 months | 6 months | Saved by stopping |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hulu + Live TV | $99.99 | $1,199.88 | $599.94 | $599.94 |
| DirecTV Stream Entertainment | $89.99 | $1,079.88 | $539.94 | $539.94 |
| Fubo Pro | $88.99 | $1,067.88 | $533.94 | $533.94 |
| YouTube TV Base | $82.99 | $995.88 | $497.94 | $497.94 |
| Sling Orange + Blue | $64.99 | $779.88 | $389.94 | $389.94 |
| Sling Orange | $45.99 | $551.88 | $275.94 | $275.94 |
| ESPN Unlimited | $31.99 | $383.88 | $191.94 | $191.94 (vs $319.99 annual: $128.05) |
The ESPN line is worth a second look. Its annual plan ($319.99) sounds like a deal, but six monthly payments cost $191.94. For a one-sport fan, the annual plan is $128 more expensive than simply paying in season.
Pause or cancel: how to switch off cleanly
Every licensed live TV service lets you cancel online without a fee. When you do, you keep access until the end of the billing period you've already paid for, so there's no need to cancel on the exact last day you watch. Cancel any time in your final month and you'll still see out the period.
Some services, YouTube TV among them, also have a pause option in account settings that suspends billing for a set period and then restarts it automatically. That's convenient, but read the terms: an automatic restart can bill you a month early if your season starts later than you expected. A clean cancellation and a calendar reminder to rejoin is the simpler habit.
Three things to know before you switch off:
DVR recordings. On most services, recordings are tied to an active subscription. Watch anything you want to keep before the period ends.
Promotions. Introductory discounts are usually for new subscribers. Returning in September may mean paying full price, so don't count on a deal.
App-store billing. If you subscribed through Apple, Google, Roku or Amazon, you cancel there, not on the service's website. Our guide to billing through Roku, Apple or direct covers each route.
The 6-month packages to avoid
The search results for this keyword are dominated by sellers offering "6 months" of tens of thousands of channels for $40 or $50. That's less than a single month of any licensed bundle with sports networks, which tells you the channel owners aren't being paid.
Signs of an unlicensed offer: channel counts in the thousands, every premium sports channel at a flat low price, "lifetime" upgrades, and checkout by crypto, gift card or a messaging app. A licensed service publishes its channel list by ZIP code, takes ordinary card payment and has an app in the official stores. When an unlicensed service goes dark mid-season, as they regularly do, the prepaid months go with it.
Our pick
Football fans: YouTube TV from the last week of August to the end of January, then cancel. With an antenna for the Super Bowl and the off-season, that's a year of football for about $415 to $500.
Basketball fans who follow national games: skip the bundle. ESPN Unlimited plus Peacock and an antenna for six months costs $269.88.
Local-team fans: check whether your regional sports network sells its own streaming subscription before paying for Fubo or DirecTV Stream.
Quick answers
Can I buy a 6-month live TV subscription? Licensed US services don't sell fixed 6-month terms. They bill monthly, so you subscribe for six months and cancel, which costs the same and leaves you free to stop earlier.
Which six months should a football fan pay for? Late August or September through January. The Super Bowl is on broadcast TV, so an antenna covers February.
How much does six months of YouTube TV cost? $497.94 at the October 2026 Base Plan price of $82.99 a month, before tax. Five months, September to January, is $414.95.
Do I need a live TV bundle for the NBA? Not for national games. Since 2025-26 they air on ESPN and ABC, NBC and Peacock, and Prime Video. You need a bundle or a team's own streaming service for most local regional broadcasts.
Will I lose my DVR if I cancel? On most services, yes. Recordings are usually tied to an active subscription, so watch what you want to keep before cancelling.
Can I pause instead of cancelling? Some services, including YouTube TV, offer a pause in account settings. Check when billing restarts, because it resumes automatically.
Are cheap 6 month IPTV packages legal? Packages offering thousands of channels for less than one month of a licensed bundle aren't licensed, and they can disappear mid-season with your money.
