Indian TV Channels: Who Owns What, and Which Service Carries It

Short answer: Indian television is dominated by four network groups — Star (now JioStar), Zee, Sony and Viacom18/Colors — plus a large independent news sector and strong regional broadcasters in each language. Which service you need depends on which group owns your channel, because rights are licensed by group, not by channel. Get that mapping right and the subscription question answers itself. Get it wrong and you pay for a package that doesn't carry the one show you wanted.

The four groups

Group Flagship channels Typically carried by
JioStar (Star + Disney India) Star Plus, Star Bharat, Star Gold, Star Sports, regional Star channels Sling Desi packs, JioHotstar in eligible markets
Zee Zee TV, Zee Cinema, &TV, Zee regional channels ZEE5 Global, some cable packages
Sony (Culver Max) Sony Entertainment, SET Max, Sony SAB, Sony BBC Earth SonyLIV, bundled in some Sling packs
Viacom18 / Colors Colors, Colors Rishtey, MTV India, regional Colors Varies by market; JioCinema in India

The Star–Disney combination into JioStar is the most consequential recent change. It merged two of the largest catalogues, which is why the Star and Disney India content that was split across services is increasingly in one place.

Entertainment channels

Star Plus is the ratings leader for Hindi general entertainment — long-running serials, and the home of most of the big-budget reality formats.

Zee TV is its closest competitor, with a similar serial-led schedule and a strong film library through Zee Cinema.

Sony Entertainment runs a mix of drama and marquee formats, and Sony SAB is the main comedy channel.

Colors rounds out the four, with a reality-heavy schedule.

For most Hindi-language households, one of these four is where the majority of viewing sits — which is why identifying yours before subscribing matters more than counting channels.

News, where the free layer is strongest

Indian news is fragmented across dozens of channels, and it's also the category most available for free.

Aaj Tak, India Today, NDTV, Republic, Times Now, Zee News and most of the rest stream free on YouTube and their own sites, worldwide, with no subscription. For a household whose live viewing is mainly news, that's a large part of the requirement solved at no cost.

Worth knowing before paying for a package sold on its news channel count.

Regional and language channels

This is where the licensed market is weakest abroad, and where it's worth checking carefully before committing.

Tamil: Star Vijay, Sun TV, Zee Tamil, Kalaignar TV
Telugu: Star Maa, Gemini TV, Zee Telugu, ETV
Malayalam: Asianet, Surya TV, Mazhavil Manorama
Kannada: Star Suvarna, Udaya TV, Colors Kannada
Bengali: Star Jalsha, Zee Bangla, Colors Bangla
Punjabi: Zee Punjabi, PTC Punjabi, Colors Punjabi
Marathi: Star Pravah, Zee Marathi, Colors Marathi

Sun TV Network, which owns Sun TV, Gemini, Surya and Udaya, is a separate group again — and its channels are frequently missing from packages built around the big four. If you're a Sun Network household, check specifically.

Regional coverage abroad is genuinely patchy. This is the category where people most often find that no licensed service carries their channel in their country, and it's a real limitation rather than something a better search will solve.

Sport

Star Sports holds the largest slate of Indian cricket rights, though specific tournaments move between broadcasters and digital platforms regularly. Sony has historically held significant football and other international rights.

The practical advice is the same as for any sport: check who holds the rights for the specific tournament this season rather than assuming the channel you remember still carries it. Rights move more than people expect.

Working out what you need

  1. List the channels you actually watch. Usually five to ten, not fifty.
  2. Identify which group owns each — the table above covers most.
  3. Check which service carries that group in your country. For the US, we've mapped this.
  4. Check the free layer for anything in news.
  5. Trial before paying, during the hours you actually watch.

A package carrying 300 Indian channels including none of your five is worse than one carrying twenty including all of them.

Quick answers

Which is the biggest Hindi entertainment channel? Star Plus, by ratings, with Zee TV closest.

What is JioStar? The merged Star India and Disney India business, which brought those catalogues together.

Are Indian news channels free abroad? Most stream free on YouTube and their own sites.

Why isn't my regional channel available? Licensing abroad is patchy, especially for smaller-language and Sun Network channels.

Does channel count matter? No. Coverage of your specific channels does.
