How we scored
We didn't run a lab. These scores are an editor's judgement built from things anyone can check: published prices, channel lineups, DVR and stream rules, each service's public record on blackouts and outages, and which devices have a native app. That's deliberate. A scorecard you can verify is more useful than "we tested 30 providers for 90 days" with nothing to show for it.
All five categories carry equal weight. That suits a general household, but it's easy to re-weight for yourself. If sports matter most, double the channels score and Hulu + Live TV draws level with YouTube TV, with DirecTV a point behind. If price is everything, double that column and Philo draws level with YouTube TV at the top, while Frndly TV climbs into the middle of the pack. If you only care about recording shows to watch later, the DVR column decides it, and five of the seven services score a 4 or 5. Ties are broken by price: when two services score the same, the cheaper one is listed first.
One more limit worth stating: these are national scores. Your local channels, regional sports network and even app performance depend on where you live and what device you use, so treat the scorecard as a shortlist, then use a free trial to check the services that make yours.
Price: list price for the main plan, with credit for cheaper entry plans. Channels: coverage of the networks most people actually watch, including locals, ESPN, Turner and regional sports. DVR: storage, how long recordings last and whether ads can be skipped. Reliability: carriage blackouts and major outages in 2024 to 2026, and how they were handled. Apps: device coverage and app quality, including the new Vega OS Fire TV sticks.
Winner by category
| Category | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Philo | 70-plus entertainment channels, unlimited DVR, $25 |
| Channels | DirecTV | Broadest regional sports coverage plus everything else |
| DVR | YouTube TV | Unlimited, nine months, every household member gets their own library |
| Reliability | Tie: Philo and Frndly TV | No sports rights, so far fewer blackout fights |
| Apps | YouTube TV | Native on virtually every TV platform, fast guide, multiview |
The reliability result surprises people. Philo and Frndly TV win it largely because they carry no expensive sports networks, which is where most carriage disputes start. That's a real advantage if you don't watch sports, and irrelevant if you do.
YouTube TV: best overall
YouTube TV isn't the cheapest and doesn't top every category, but it's never weak. Over 100 channels including locals in nearly every market, unlimited DVR with recordings kept for nine months, six household accounts, three streams at once, and an app that feels the same on a Roku, a Samsung TV and an iPhone.
Its reliability score takes a hit for November 2025, when Disney's channels, including ESPN and ABC, went dark for about two weeks during a carriage dispute. It was Disney's longest blackout to date. YouTube TV offered subscribers a credit, and the deal that ended it is expected to bring ESPN Unlimited's full app experience to the service. It's a reminder that the biggest platform has the hardest negotiations.
Pick this if: you want one service that does everything well. Skip it if: you need a regional sports network for your local NBA or NHL team; YouTube TV carries few of them.
Cheaper entry: YouTube TV's newer genre plans, such as Entertainment at $54.99, trade channels for price.
Not ready to commit? Sling has no contract: pay month to month and cancel online anytime.
See this month's plans →Hulu + Live TV: best value bundle
Hulu + Live TV costs a little more than YouTube TV, from about $89.99 depending on the plan, but it includes Disney+ and Hulu's on-demand library with ads, and ESPN Unlimited access. If you'd pay for Disney+ and ESPN separately anyway, the effective cost of the live channels drops a long way.
The DVR is unlimited, the lineup closely matches YouTube TV's, and two streams are included with an add-on for more. The interface is busier, which is why it loses a point on apps. Since Disney combined Hulu + Live TV and Fubo under one roof in late 2025, the two services have continued to operate separately.
Pick this if: your family watches Disney+ and someone wants ESPN. Skip it if: you only want live TV and don't care for the extras.
The rest of the field
DirecTV (19/25). The broadest channel list, the most regional sports networks, unlimited DVR and unlimited streams at home. It loses on price and on a less polished app. Its genre packs, such as MySports at $64.99, are a cheaper door in. Best for fans of a local team.
Philo (19/25). $25 for AMC, HGTV, Food Network, Hallmark, Discovery, Nickelodeon and more, with unlimited DVR kept for a year. No sports, no news networks, no locals. Bundle+ at $33 adds HBO Max with ads, AMC+ and Discovery+. Best for entertainment viewers.
Fubo (18/25). Excellent for sports breadth, including many regional sports networks and plenty of 4K events, but no TNT or TBS, and a regional sports fee in many markets. The Sports plan at $64.99 is a newer, cheaper option. Best for soccer and RSN fans who don't need Turner networks.
Sling TV (17/25). The cheapest way into ESPN or Fox Sports in a cable-style bundle: Orange $45.99, Blue $50.99, both $60.99. The DVR is the weak spot at 50 hours, with an upgrade for more. Locals are limited. Best for budget sports fans with an antenna.
Frndly TV (16/25). From $8.99 for Hallmark, The Weather Channel, A&E and family-friendly channels. The basic plan streams in standard definition without a DVR. Best for seniors and light viewers.
What changed this quarter
Price rises around the edges. Peacock and ESPN Unlimited both raised prices in September 2026: Peacock Premium to $12.99 and ESPN Unlimited to $31.99. Many live TV households pay for at least one of them on top of their bundle.
Skinny plans went mainstream. YouTube TV's genre plans and Fubo's Sports plan mean the big services now compete with Sling on price, at least for sports and news.
New Fire TV sticks run Vega OS. Amazon's newest sticks only run Appstore apps rebuilt for Vega. The big live TV services are moving over, but check before buying a new stick.
Unlicensed "best IPTV 2026" lists keep ranking. Many of the pages that top this search rank sellers offering 20,000 channels for $15. None of those is licensed, which is why none of them is scored here.
Our pick
For most households, YouTube TV is the best IPTV service in 2026. For Disney+ households, Hulu + Live TV is the better buy. If $83 a month is too much, Philo for entertainment or Sling Orange plus an antenna for sports gets you most of the way for a third to half the price.
