Short answer: ranked by what a year actually costs, the best-value US providers are Philo (roughly $300 to $400 a year), Sling TV (about $550 for one package) and YouTube TV (about $1,000 for the full plan, less on a genre plan). DirecTV, Hulu + Live TV and Fubo all land around $1,050 to $1,100 before extras. The non-obvious part is that the advertised monthly price is the floor, not the average: regional sports fees, an extra-streams add-on or a promotion that expires in month four can push the real annual figure 10 to 25 percent higher.
At a glance
US live TV, per year
| Lowest annual cost | Philo, about $300-400 |
| Best value with ESPN | Sling Orange, about $550 |
| Best full service | YouTube TV, about $1,000 |
| Biggest hidden cost | Regional sports fees |
| Easiest saving | Pause in the off-season |
Why rank by the year, not the month
Every live TV service leads with a monthly number. It is the easiest figure to compare and the least useful one for a household budget.
Month-to-month services are designed to be joined and left freely, which means the price you see is often a promotional rate, excludes fees that appear at checkout, and assumes you never add anything. Over twelve months, all three of those assumptions tend to break.
Annual cost also shows something monthly prices hide: how much you could save by not paying in months you don't watch. A sports fan who cancels for the summer is effectively buying a different product from someone who subscribes all year.
The figures below are estimates built from each provider's regular published price in September 2026, multiplied out over a year. They exclude sales tax, which varies by state, and assume one base package with no extras unless stated.
The ranking
| Rank | Service | Monthly | 12 months | Likely extras |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Philo | About $25-33 | About $300-400 | Few; no sports to add |
| 2 | Sling TV (one package) | $45.99 | About $552 | DVR upgrade, sports add-ons |
| 3 | Sling Orange + Blue | $60.99 | About $732 | Antenna for missing locals |
| 4 | YouTube TV (genre plan) | $54.99-71.99 | About $660-864 | 4K, extra streams |
| 5 | YouTube TV (main plan) | $82.99 | About $996 | 4K, extra streams |
| 6 | Fubo | About $85-89 | About $1,020-1,070 | Regional sports fee |
| 7 | DirecTV | From $89.99 | About $1,080+ | Regional sports fee |
| 8 | Hulu + Live TV | About $90 | About $1,080 | Ad-free upgrade |
Hulu + Live TV ranks last on raw cost but includes Disney+ and ESPN+. If you would otherwise pay for those separately, subtract their value and it moves up the table. The same applies to YouTube TV's Sports plan, which includes ESPN Unlimited.

Regional sports fees
Regional sports networks, the channels that carry local NBA, NHL and MLB teams, are expensive to carry. Some providers pass that cost on as a separate monthly fee in the areas where those networks are available.
It depends on your ZIP code. Two neighbours in different markets can see different totals at checkout for the same package.
It is not optional where it applies, because it is attached to the package rather than sold as an add-on.
It can change mid-year as carriage deals are renegotiated.
DirecTV and Fubo are the two most likely to add one, because they carry the most regional sports networks. That is also why they are the best choices for following a local team, so the fee is partly the price of the feature. The only reliable way to see it is to go as far as the final checkout screen with your own address.
Promotions that expire
Introductory offers are the most common reason a first-year budget goes wrong.
YouTube TV's genre plans launched in 2026 with discounts that lasted twelve months on some plans and three months on others. Sling regularly discounts the first month. Most services run free trials of a few days that turn into a paid subscription automatically.
Do the sum at the regular price. If a service is only worth it at the promotional rate, that will become obvious in month four or month thirteen.
Note the end date on the day you sign up. A calendar reminder a week before is the simplest defence against paying for something you meant to cancel.
The add-ons people end up buying
Add-ons are small monthly amounts that compound over a year. The common ones:
| Add-on | Why people buy it | Worth it? |
|---|---|---|
| Extra simultaneous streams | More than three TVs in use at once | Only if it happens weekly |
| 4K | Sport in higher resolution | Limited 4K content; check first |
| Bigger DVR (Sling) | 50 hours fills quickly | Often yes, if you record |
| Premium movie channels | Convenience in one app | Compare with the standalone app |
Two $10 add-ons turn a $996 year into roughly $1,236. That is worth deciding on purpose rather than by default.
Paying only in the months you watch
The largest saving available is structural: none of these services has a contract.
A football household that subscribes from September to early February and cancels for the rest of the year pays for about five or six months. On YouTube TV's main plan, that is roughly $415 to $500 instead of $996.
The trade-offs are small but real. Cloud DVR recordings are generally lost when you cancel, and a promotional rate won't come back when you rejoin. Some services offer a pause option instead of cancelling, which is worth checking in your account settings.

Where free fits in
The cheapest line in any annual budget is the one you don't need.
An indoor antenna costs about $30 to $40 once and receives ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC and PBS where there is a signal, often in better picture quality than streaming. Free ad-supported services such as Pluto TV, Tubi and The Roku Channel add hundreds of channels at no cost.
For many households the best-value setup is not the cheapest single service but a combination: antenna for locals, plus Philo or one Sling package. That lands around $330 to $590 for the year.
What about the $15 services?
Searches for IPTV providers also turn up sellers offering thousands of channels for $10 to $15 a month, or $60 to $100 a year.
The annual figure is exactly why they appeal and exactly why they are risky. Licensed services pay the networks for every channel and still charge $80 to $90 for a full line-up. A service charging a fraction of that isn't paying, which is why such services are regularly shut down in enforcement actions, taking prepaid years with them. Our guide to judging an IPTV service before you pay sets out the checks.
A cheap annual plan that stops working in month three is the most expensive option on this page.
A worked annual budget
Numbers are easier to trust when you can see them add up. Here is one illustrative household: two adults, one football fan, three televisions, living in a market where the regional sports network isn't a priority.
Option A: full YouTube TV all year. Twelve months at $82.99 is about $996. Adding extra streams for a busy Sunday would push it past $1,100.
Option B: YouTube TV Sports + News during the season, nothing in summer. Seven months at $71.99 is about $504, plus an antenna at $35 once for local stations in the off months: roughly $539.
Option C: Sling Orange plus antenna all year. Twelve months at $45.99 is about $552, plus the antenna: roughly $587, with ESPN and TNT but only 50 hours of DVR.
The gap between A and B is more than $450 a year for this household, and nothing they actually watch was lost. The exercise is worth repeating with your own months and channels, because the answer depends far more on when you watch than on which service you pick. Write the plan down, with the months you intend to cancel, so the saving actually happens.
Quick answers
What is the cheapest live TV service in the USA per year? Philo, at roughly $300 to $400 a year, though it has no sports, no local channels and no major news networks.
What is the cheapest way to get ESPN for a year? Sling Orange at about $552 a year, or YouTube TV's Sports plan if you also want local channels in one app.
How much does YouTube TV cost per year? About $996 on the $82.99 main plan, before taxes and add-ons, or roughly $660 to $864 on a genre plan at regular prices.
What is a regional sports fee? A monthly charge some providers add in areas where they carry local sports networks. It depends on your ZIP code and appears at checkout.
Can I cancel in the off-season? Yes. All the major services are month to month, though recordings and promotional prices may not survive a cancellation.
Is a cheap annual IPTV plan a good deal? Rarely. Very low prices usually mean the channels aren't licensed, and such services can disappear with the prepaid balance.
Annual figures are estimates based on providers' regular published prices and exclude taxes, promotions and location-based fees, all of which change. Confirm the final price at checkout with your own ZIP code. Checked September 2026.
