Short answer: for most people the best device for TiviMate in October 2026 is the Walmart onn 4K Pro at about $60: 3GB of memory, 32GB of storage, built-in Ethernet and a USB port, on full Google TV. If you want more headroom, the Google TV Streamer ($149.99 list) is the step up. The Nvidia Shield TV Pro is still the best box for recording, but it now costs $299.99. On Amazon, only Android-based Fire OS models run TiviMate; the newer Vega OS sticks don't.
At a glance
Best TiviMate hardware, October 2026
| Best value | onn 4K Pro, about $60 |
| Best overall | Google TV Streamer, $149.99 |
| Best for recording | Shield TV Pro, $299.99 |
| Best Fire TV | Fire TV Cube or Stick 4K Max |
| Won't run TiviMate | Apple TV, Roku, Vega OS Fire TV |
The ranked list, with prices
All six run TiviMate today. Prices are US list prices as of October 2026, which matters this year: Amazon, Google and Nvidia all raised hardware prices between August and October, mostly blaming memory costs. Sale prices can be far lower, and we note the recent lows where we've seen them.
| Rank | Device | Price (Oct 2026) | RAM / storage | Ethernet | USB drive |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | onn 4K Pro | About $60 | 3GB / 32GB | Built in | Yes |
| 2 | Google TV Streamer | $149.99 | 4GB / 32GB | Built in | No USB-A |
| 3 | Nvidia Shield TV Pro | $299.99 | 3GB / 16GB | Gigabit | 2 x USB 3.0 |
| 4 | Fire TV Cube (3rd gen) | $199.99 list, $89.99 on sale | 2GB / 16GB | Built in | Yes |
| 5 | Fire TV Stick 4K Max | $84.99 list, $35 to $50 on sale | 2GB / 16GB | Adapter | No |
| 6 | Fire TV Stick 4K Plus | $69.99 list, being phased out | 2GB / 8GB | Adapter | No |
The ranking weighs how well each one handles a big guide and fast channel changes, whether it can be wired, whether it can record to a drive, how long it's likely to get updates, and, this year more than most, what it costs.
What actually matters for TiviMate
TiviMate isn't a demanding app until you give it something demanding: a large playlist, a week of guide data, several streams in multi-view, or recordings running in the background. Then four things separate a good box from a frustrating one.
Memory. TiviMate keeps the guide in memory. With 2GB, a big guide works but can feel sluggish when it updates; 3GB to 4GB is comfortable. This is the clearest single upgrade over a cheap stick.
A wired connection. Live TV is less forgiving than on-demand video, because there's no big buffer to hide a Wi-Fi hiccup. A box with an Ethernet port, or a stick with Amazon's adapter, removes the most common cause of stutter.
Somewhere to put recordings. Recording is a TiviMate Premium feature, and streaming devices ship with 8GB to 32GB, much of it used by the system. A USB port for a drive, or a fast network share, matters if you'll record.
The operating system. TiviMate needs Android. Google TV and Android TV boxes run it, as do Android-based Fire OS devices. Amazon's newer Vega OS sticks, Apple TV, Roku and Samsung or LG TVs don't.
Notice what's missing: 4K and Dolby Vision. They're nice, but most live channels aren't 4K, and every device on our list handles them anyway.
The Google TV boxes
1. onn 4K Pro: best for most people
Walmart's own-brand box is the easiest recommendation in this category. It runs full Google TV with the Play Store, so TiviMate installs normally and you can buy Premium inside the app. Three gigabytes of memory and 32GB of storage are more than most sticks offer at any price, and it has both an Ethernet port and a USB port, which covers wiring and recording without adapters.
It's been about $50 for most of its life and sits around $60 now, after this year's industry-wide price rises. The trade-offs are a plain plastic design, a chip that's fine rather than fast, and Walmart's update record, which is decent but not Google's.
Buy it if you want the most TiviMate for the least money. Skip it if you want a premium remote or the fastest interface.
2. Google TV Streamer: best overall
Google's own box has the most memory here, 4GB, and 32GB of storage, with Ethernet built in. Menus and the TiviMate guide feel quick, and as Google's own hardware, it's likely to get updates for longer than anything else on this list.
The problem is price. Google raised it from $99.99 to $149.99 at the end of August 2026, and some retailers have since followed. It also lacks a standard USB-A port for a recording drive, so recorders will want a network share instead. Google is reportedly working on a second-generation model, which makes this a less obvious buy than it was a year ago.
Buy it if you want the smoothest Google TV box and don't record much. Skip it if you need a USB drive, or can wait to see the successor.
The Shield, at its new price
3. Nvidia Shield TV Pro: best for recording
The Shield TV Pro has long been the TiviMate enthusiast's box, for reasons that still hold: two USB 3.0 ports for drives, Gigabit Ethernet, 3GB of memory, and a long history of updates. If you record a lot, it handles a drive and several things at once better than anything else here.
But on October 2, 2026, Nvidia raised the Pro from $199.99 to $299.99, and it discontinued the cheaper tube-shaped Shield TV. That's a lot of money for 2019 hardware with 16GB of storage. It's still the right buy for a heavy recorder; for everyone else, the onn 4K Pro does most of the job for a fifth of the price.
Buy it if recording to USB drives is central to how you watch. Skip it if you mainly watch live.
The Fire TV options
Fire TV is fine for TiviMate as long as you buy a model running Android-based Fire OS. Amazon is moving its sticks to Vega OS, which can't run TiviMate at all, and its product listings don't make the difference obvious. One extra catch: Fire TV has no Google Play billing, so you buy Premium in the TiviMate Companion app on an Android phone or tablet.
4. Fire TV Cube (3rd gen)
The best Android-based Fire TV Amazon makes, and probably the last of its kind: built-in Ethernet, a USB port, Wi-Fi 6E and hands-free Alexa. Its list price jumped from $139.99 to $199.99, which is too much; it was $89.99 during Prime Big Deal Days in October 2026, which is a good price. Buy it on sale if you're committed to Fire TV. Skip it at full price.
5. Fire TV Stick 4K Max
The strongest Fire OS stick: 2GB of memory, 16GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6E. No Ethernet without Amazon's adapter, and no USB for a drive. List price is now $84.99, but it has repeatedly sold for $35 to $50. Buy it on sale for a bedroom TV. Skip it if you want to record.
6. Fire TV Stick 4K Plus
Fire OS 8, 2GB of memory and only 8GB of storage. Amazon is letting stock run out. At its recent $37.99 sale price it's a reasonable second-TV stick; at the $69.99 list price, the 4K Max or onn 4K Pro is better value.

What not to buy
- Vega OS Fire TV Sticks, including the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, the new third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K and the newer Fire TV Stick HD. No TiviMate, no workaround.
- Apple TV, Roku, and Samsung or LG smart TVs. TiviMate isn't made for them. If you're committed to one of these, our TiviMate alternatives guide covers what to use instead.
- Unbranded Android boxes sold with big storage claims and "fully loaded" or "jailbroken" software. They often run old, uncertified Android, rarely get security updates, and the preinstalled extras are the opposite of what you want on a box signed in to your accounts.
- Older 1GB sticks, such as the Fire TV Stick Lite or third-generation Fire TV Stick. They run TiviMate, but a large guide will feel slow.
Smart TVs with Google TV built in, from Sony, TCL, Hisense and others, do run TiviMate from the Play Store. They're fine for casual use, but their processors and storage are usually weaker than a $60 box, so we'd still add an onn 4K Pro if TiviMate is your main way of watching.
If you plan to record
Recording is where hardware choice matters most, and where cheap sticks fall down. TiviMate Premium can record to internal storage, a USB drive or a network folder, depending on the device.
Use a drive, not internal storage. An hour of HD can take a few gigabytes, and a stick with 8GB to 16GB fills up within days. A USB flash drive or a small portable hard drive on the onn 4K Pro, Shield or Fire TV Cube solves it.
Wire the box. Recording a channel while you watch another doubles the data coming in. Ethernet keeps both steady.
Know what you can record. Over-the-air channels from an HDHomeRun tuner are the cleanest legal source for recording at home. A licensed provider's own terms decide whether recording its streams is permitted.
TiviMate is a player only, and it ships no channels. Whatever you buy, you'll pair it with your own legal source: an antenna tuner, a Channels DVR setup, or a licensed service that supplies a playlist to its own customers.
Our pick
Buy the onn 4K Pro. At about $60 it has more memory and storage than any stick, Ethernet and USB built in, and full Google Play, which makes installing TiviMate and buying Premium as simple as it gets. It's the one we'd put on the main TV and the bedroom TV alike.
Step up to the Google TV Streamer if you want the smoothest experience and longest support, and can live without USB. Pay for the Shield TV Pro only if recording to drives is the point. If you're staying with Amazon, buy a Fire TV Cube or Stick 4K Max on sale, and check it's a Fire OS model before you pay.
Quick answers
What is the best device for TiviMate in 2026? The onn 4K Pro, at about $60, for most people. The Google TV Streamer is the premium pick and the Shield TV Pro is best for recording.
Is the Nvidia Shield still worth it for TiviMate? Only for heavy recorders. Since October 2, 2026 the Shield TV Pro costs $299.99, and the cheaper tube model has been discontinued.
Does TiviMate work on all Fire TV Sticks? No. It works on Fire OS models such as the 4K Max, 4K Plus and Fire TV Cube, but not on Vega OS models such as the 4K Select and the new third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K.
How much RAM does TiviMate need? It runs on 2GB, but 3GB to 4GB keeps a large guide and multi-view smooth.
Can I use TiviMate on Apple TV or Roku? No. TiviMate only runs on Android-based devices.
Do I need Ethernet for TiviMate? Not strictly, but a wired connection is the most reliable fix for live-TV buffering, especially when recording.
Do I need a USB port for TiviMate recording? It's the easiest option. Streaming devices have little internal storage, so recordings are best saved to a USB drive or a network folder.
