Short answer: if your household needs local channels, the cheapest good setup in the US is an antenna for ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox, plus the cheapest streaming service that covers whatever cable channels you actually watch. That combination beats every full bundle on price. Antenna plus Philo comes to about $27 a month with the hardware spread over two years, against $82.99 for YouTube TV. No antenna signal? Sling Select with its locals add-on is the cheapest paid route at $29.99. Below are eight setups ranked by real monthly cost, prices as of October 2026.
At a glance
Cheap US live TV with locals
| Cheapest overall | Antenna + free apps, about $2/mo |
| Best value | Antenna + Philo, about $27/mo |
| Best with ESPN | Antenna + Sling Orange, about $48/mo |
| No antenna signal | Sling Select + locals, $29.99 |
| Full-bundle benchmark | YouTube TV, $82.99 |
Why an antenna changes the maths
Local channels are the expensive part of streaming TV. Every live bundle that includes ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox pays those stations retransmission fees for each subscriber, which is a big reason full bundles start at $82.99 a month.
Those same stations broadcast free over the air. Put up an antenna, and you no longer need a service that carries them. That opens up the cheap services built without locals, such as Philo, Frndly TV and Sling Orange, which are far cheaper precisely because they skip that cost.
There's a second benefit people overlook. Over-the-air signals are less compressed than most streams, so the local football game often looks sharper through an antenna than through a streaming bundle. In a growing number of markets, stations also broadcast in ATSC 3.0, branded NextGen TV, which can carry 4K and better audio to a compatible TV or tuner. Some of those NextGen broadcasts are encrypted and won't play on every device, so treat that as a bonus rather than a reason to buy.
The one real limitation is placement. A single antenna feeds the TV it's plugged into. If you want locals in the bedroom and on your phone too, add a network tuner or a DVR box, which we cost out below.
So the question for a budget household isn't "which cheap service has locals?" It's "can I get my locals by antenna?" For most people in and around US cities, the answer is yes. Check a reception map for your address first, using the FCC's DTV reception maps or an antenna maker's signal tool.
Eight setups ranked by monthly cost
Service prices are October 2026 list prices before tax. To compare fairly, we spread one-time hardware over 24 months: about $40 for a decent indoor antenna ($1.67 a month), or $129.95 for a Tablo DVR bundled with an antenna ($5.41 a month).
| # | Setup | Service | With antenna | With Tablo DVR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Antenna + Pluto TV, Tubi, Roku Channel | $0 | $1.67 | $5.41 |
| 2 | Antenna + Frndly TV Classic | $10.99 | $12.66 | $16.40 |
| 3 | Antenna + Philo Essential | $25.00 | $26.67 | $30.41 |
| 4 | Antenna + Philo Bundle+ | $33.00 | $34.67 | $38.41 |
| 5 | Antenna + Sling Blue | $45.99 | $47.66 | $51.40 |
| 6 | Antenna + Sling Orange | $45.99 | $47.66 | $51.40 |
| 7 | Antenna + Philo + ESPN Unlimited | $56.99 | $58.66 | $62.40 |
| 8 | Antenna + Sling Orange & Blue | $60.99 | $62.66 | $66.40 |
| – | YouTube TV alone (benchmark) | $82.99 | – | – |
Even the most complete combination on the list, Sling Orange & Blue with an antenna and a DVR, comes in about $16 a month under YouTube TV. The sweet spot for most households sits at rows 3 and 4.
The one-time hardware
Antenna, $20 to $60 indoors. A flat indoor antenna works well within roughly 30 miles of the towers with a clear path. Put it high, near a window facing the towers. Farther out, an attic or rooftop model at $60 to $150 makes a big difference. Buy from a store with easy returns, because reception is local and hard to predict.
A DVR or network tuner, optional. An antenna plugged into a TV gives you live locals on that TV only, with no recording. Two boxes solve that:
- Tablo ($99.95, or $129.95 with an antenna, per PCWorld's December 2025 review, no subscription required) records locals and streams them to Roku, Fire TV, Google TV and phones through its app.
- HDHomeRun (Flex Duo $109.99, Flex Quatro $149.99, Flex 4K $199.99 on SiliconDust's site) sends live locals to every screen on your network. Recording needs no subscription, and the extended guide is $35 a year if you want it.
A streaming device if your TV's built-in apps are slow: entry Roku and Fire TV sticks cost roughly $30 to $50.

Not ready to commit? Sling has no contract: pay month to month and cancel online anytime.
See this month's plans →Pick this if, skip it if
1. Antenna + free apps. Pick this if you watch network TV, local news and Sunday football and not much else. Skip it if anyone in the house has a favourite cable channel.
2. Antenna + Frndly TV Classic ($10.99). Pick this for Hallmark, classic TV and family viewing, especially for older viewers who want simple channels. Skip it for news or sports networks, which Frndly doesn't carry. See our live TV for seniors ranking for more on this kind of setup.
3. Antenna + Philo Essential ($25). Pick this if your cable habit is HGTV, Food Network, AMC, A&E, Comedy Central and the like. Philo's unlimited DVR keeps recordings for a year. Skip it if you need ESPN, CNN or Fox News: Philo has no sports or news networks.
4. Antenna + Philo Bundle+ ($33). Pick this if you'd otherwise pay for HBO Max: Bundle+ adds HBO Max Basic, AMC+ and Discovery+ for $8. Skip it if you don't watch HBO.
5. Antenna + Sling Blue ($45.99). Pick this for cable news (CNN, Fox News, MSNBC's successor MS NOW) plus FS1 and NFL Network, with three screens. Skip it if ESPN matters.
6. Antenna + Sling Orange ($45.99). Pick this for ESPN and Disney channels plus TNT. Skip it if more than one person streams at once: Orange allows a single screen.
7. Antenna + Philo + ESPN Unlimited ($56.99). Pick this for an entertainment-plus-ESPN household that doesn't watch cable news. Skip it if you need Fox Sports channels beyond what the antenna brings.
8. Antenna + Sling Orange & Blue ($60.99). Pick this for the widest mix of sports, news and entertainment under $65. Skip it if your total is getting close to YouTube TV, whose DVR and three-screen setup are better.
If an antenna won't work where you live
Rural homes far from towers, apartments facing the wrong way and buildings that block signals can all make an antenna impractical. Then you're paying for locals, and the cheapest routes are:
| Route | Monthly | Locals covered |
|---|---|---|
| Sling Select + all-locals add-on | $29.99 | ABC, NBC, Fox where offered |
| Same + Paramount+ Premium | $43.98 | Adds live CBS |
| Peacock Premium + Paramount+ Premium + Fox One | $46.97 | NBC, CBS, Fox (no ABC) |
| YouTube TV | $82.99 | All four, plus 100+ cable channels |
Sling's locals depend on your ZIP code, so check before subscribing. If the app-by-app route leaves you juggling three services to save $35, a single full bundle may be worth the simplicity.
Cheap offers to avoid
Search for "cheap IPTV USA" and many results push services promising every US channel, locals included, for $10 to $15 a month. They aren't licensed. No legal service can deliver local stations nationwide plus ESPN and the rest at that price, because the stations alone cost more than that per subscriber.
The giveaways are consistent: thousands of channels, "all US locals" for any city, yearly or lifetime prices under $100, payment by crypto or gift card, and no app in the official stores. They also tend to fail exactly when you need them, during big games, and shut down without refunds. An antenna gets you those same local channels legally, in better picture quality, for a one-time $40.
Our pick
Best cheap setup for most US households: an antenna plus Philo Essential, about $27 a month. Add a Tablo if you want to record locals, which brings it to about $30.
Best for sports on a budget: an antenna plus Sling Orange. Your locals carry most NFL games, and Orange adds ESPN and TNT for $45.99.
Best without an antenna: Sling Select with locals at $29.99, adding Paramount+ Premium if CBS matters.
